The Pain in the Neck Workshop with Terry Brown - Saturday, September 18th, from 1:00PM - 3:30PM
Terry Brown will present a "Pain in the Neck Workshop" on Saturday, September 18th, from 1:00PM - 3:30PM.
Many conditions can cause pain in the neck and shoulder area. Our modern day technology with computer screens and keyboards can challenge our posture and create forward slumped shoulders and a forward head, which can be a common cause of neck tension. The weight of the head it too much for the neck to bear. The slumped forward posture can cause other problems such as tingling in the fingers, aches in your arms, and a vice-like sensation of pressure encircling your skull. In addition, this slumped posture may compress internal organs, contributing to respiratory, circulatory and digestive problems.
Yoga can give us the tools we need to heal ourselves. Physically, yoga postures can help us to strengthen and develop flexibility in the muscles supporting the neck and shoulders, as well as cultivate better alignment of the neck, creating a more and natural cervical curve. We develope a better awarness of our posture during the day.
Join Terry in this workshop and learn yoga techniques including physical practice, breathing exercises, and dietary suggestions that may help you gain control of your neck pain.
Workshop fee is $30.00, or $25.00 by September 13th, Spring Garden.
See Workshops for more information and registration.

Hoopdio (Hula Hooping + Cardio) Class - Sunday, September 26th - 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Hula hooping has been a popular activity for over 50 years, and now adults are discovering a reincarnation of the hoop and seeing it in a whole new way.
Hooping for fitness with larger, heavier "modern" size hoops is a unique and fun way to blow off steam. In this workshop you will enjoy playful exercise, while still getting an intense core and full body workout. We will also focus on strength training with stretches and poses that are complimentary to yoga.
Local fitness instructor Monica Casey is very enthusiastic about bringing hoops back to the masses with her Winston Salem based company Monkey Hooper. Not only does she make and design weighted hoops, but she also teaches classes for adults and children throughout the Triad. "Hooping appeals to those who are looking for a little change in their workout routines," Monica says. "It is the perfect way to exercise, de-stress, and reenergize. It can be modified for any fitness level, done indoors or out, and always leaves a smile on your face."
Hoops will be supplied for your workout.
Please bring a mat or one will be supplied for you.
The cost of the class is $20 - Please see Workshops for registration.

Sustainable Yoga - A Weekend Workshop with Baxter Bell - October 15th - 17th
Baxter Bell returns to TYI and will present his workshop, "Sustainable Yoga", October 15th - 17th. Certainly not the sexiest title of a yoga workshop you've ever heard, but so revelant in light of the recent Gulf Coast oil spill and our addiction to outside sources of energy. Wouldn't it be helpful to have a yoga practice that provided enough energy to live a full, joyful life, that kept out bodies healthy, helped us heal when sick or injured, and encouraged us to get along with one another?
Well, ancient yoga suggests we have an energy leak or spill that extends all around us just a few inches away from our surface, and the right balance of physical poses, breath work and meditation can help contain all that vital energy in our bodies, available for whatever we need! This weekends practices will focus on just such practices. And we will enjoy great community and have lots of fun as a bonus!
Friday, October 15th - 6:00PM - 8:30PM - Laughter, A Light Heart and Yoga!
Saturday, October 16th - 9:00AM - 12:00PM - Regaining Our Power
Saturday, October 16th - 2:30PM - 5:00PM - Discharge to Recharge: Yoga for Insomnia and Your Wrists
Sunday, October 17th - 9:00AM - 12:00PM - Wind Beneath Your Sails: Vayus and Backbends
