The Triad Yoga Institute, was established in 1999, by co-owners Terry Brown and Jerry Cunningham. We have come a long way since our first studio opened on South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro, moving and expanding our studio space to 2 Greensboro locations. Our main location is on Spring Garden Street, the other is near Guilford College, on College Road. We are fortunate to have many of the best Yoga instructors in the area teaching in our studios, offering a variety of classes for every student of yoga from beginner to advanced. We also offer specialty yoga classes: Therapeutics and Exercise, Gentle, and Stretch. An upheld philosophy here at Triad Yoga is one of compassion, seeing the needs of the individual as the highest priority. We address physical needs and offer tools for the mind and spirit. Workshops with renowned teachers are held throughout the year. Our 200 hr and 500 hr teaching training programs are recognized by the Yoga Alliance. The Triad Yoga Institutes short history is now blended into the long 6000 year history of yoga, and for that we are proud. Breathe, relax and evolve at Triad Yoga.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start yoga classes at your studio?
We teach our classes in 12 week sessions. Beginner students may wish to start at the beginning of a session, but we invite new students to start at anytime. If it is late in the session, you could opt to take Gentle Yoga or Yoga Stretch for an easier class.

When are the beginner classes?
At the Spring Garden St Studio, the beginner classes are Monday at 7:15pm, Tuesday at 3:30PM, Wednesday at 9:30am, Thursday at 5:30pm, and Sunday at 3:00pm.
Beginners can also take Gentle Yoga on Friday at 8:30am in the Spring Garden location, and Tuesdays at 6:00pm at the College Rd location.
Beginners may also take Yoga Stretch.

What is the difference in Level 1 and Gentle Yoga?
In Level 1 classes, the yoga poses are taught from the ground up, with each week's class progressing on what was previously taught the week before. Gentle Yoga classes are kept at a slow and gentle pace, taking into consideration that some students need this type of class when working with physical challenges.

How long are the classes?
All classes are 1 hour and 25 minutes long.

What type of yoga do you teach?
We teach Hatha Yoga with attention to alignment. Some people called this Alignment Based Yoga. Included in these classes along with the yoga poses are breath work, meditation, and relaxation. We also offer Power Yoga and some other specialty classes. We also have a teacher that teaches Iyengar Yoga to Level 2 students. This class is even more detail with attention to alignment.

Can I come and try a class?
We offer free trial classes before the session begins. If your try a class other than the free introductory classes, we ask that you pay the drop in fee.

Do I need to register for one of the free classes and how do I register?
You do not need to register. You may just drop in.

Where are you located?
Our main studio is located at 1712 Spring Garden St., in between Aycock St and South Chapman.
We have a satellite location on College Rd. This street is located between Market St and Friendly Ave. Guilford College Rd becomes College Rd at Market St, and College Rd becomes New Garden Rd at Friendly Ave, so it can be confusing. We are in a 2 story brick office complex called Guilford Center. Another noteworthy landmark is that this building is located at the end of Tower Rd.

What do I wear?
Loose comfortable clothing that is easy to move in.

What do I bring?
We provide all props. If you have a yoga sticky mat, we suggest you bring your own, but we have plenty for everyone if you don't.

I haven't done any exercise in a long time. How will I do in yoga?
You'll be fine. Yoga is non competitive, and your instructor will help encourage you to work at a level that is comfortable for you. You'll never be expected to do something that your body is not ready for.

When can I start?
We recommend beginners start at the beginning of a session, but it's fine to start anytime if you feel you want to go ahead and get started. If you have some yoga experience elsewhere from a qualified teacher, you may start at any time at the appropriate level.

Do I have to take the same class every week?
Although we ask you to sign up for a particular class and try to stay with that one, we offer a flexible schedule, as long as space permits. Staying with the classes that you sign up for helps your teachers get to know you and your body better and then they can help you better.
Some classes do have a size limitation. The studio on College Rd limits the size of their classes to 16 students. If you don't sign up for the classes there, you may be closed out and unable to drop in.

What are the ages of your students?
15 years old to 100 years old (For 13-14 year olds; we need to discuss their personalities with the parent to see of they are candidates for adult classes.

Do you provide childcare?
We feel that your time at the studio is more beneficial if you can come and leave your children with friends or family. We want this experience to be completely yours. If your children are on the location, you will not be able to completely detach from them. We do not provide childcare.

Are there many men in the classes?
In the beginner classes there are fewer men, but in the higher levels there is about a 60/40 ratio. More and more men are practicing yoga.

Will yoga help me (lose weight, tone my body, relax me, strengthen me, get me more flexible)?
Yoga can help with any of the above, but as to what it really can "do" for you can only be determined with a regular practice. We encourage students to recognize their goals and keep them in mind throughout their practice, realizing that everyone is unique, and what happens for one person may be different from someone else.

How do I determine the appropriate level?
Review the class descriptions. If you have been taking yoga, but would like to learn a little more about how we teach before going to the level 2 ongoing class, we suggest level 1-2.

What is the price?
Please refer to the registration page.

If I sign up for 12 classes, does that mean I can only come once a week for 12 weeks?
No. When you purchase a package of classes, you can use them as frequently as you like. You can purchase a package of 12 classes and use them up in 4 weeks by coming to class 3 times a week, and then buy another package.

How many times a week should I come?
That will be up to you. If you really want to experience the benefits of yoga, you should do it more than once a week. Some instructors say you should do yoga at least 3 times a week, but that may be based on the theory that we should exercise 3 times a week. We feel that you should do yoga everyday! Even if it is just for a few minutes. We don't want you to feel like you should come to class everyday, however. You can come to class once a week, and do a little bit on your own the other days. It takes time, but if you stick with it, soon you will look forward to your practice.

Can I come and watch a class?
We don't encourage coming to watch classes. Out of respect for the students participating in the classes, some of them become uncomfortable when they know they are being watched. We want to provide a comfortable atmosphere for our students. We suggest you come to one of the free classes, because you will get more understanding of what yoga can do for you that way rather than by just watching.

I want to sign up for the next session (or I want to sign up for a workshop). Can I do this over the phone or over the internet?
You can sign up for classes or workshops over the internet at the web site, www.triadyoga.com.

I'm a dancer and I'm very flexible, do I have to start at Level 1?
It's great that you have flexibility, and that will definitely help you in the yoga poses. However, since Yoga is about more that flexibility, we feel that anyone new to the practice should start at the beginning. We teach basic yoga postures and alignment principles in the beginner classes. This is necessary to understand before going on to higher levels. We all need to learn how to ground in the poses, find the correct form and the alignment, and understand how to breathe in the poses.

I want a more active class, not a quiet meditative class.
Classes where the postures are held for longer periods of time can be as challenging as classes where you flow in and out of poses. Holding poses create an internal heat and elevate the heart rate. It's important to understand the postures and alignment principles before going to a class where you flow very quickly in and out of poses, reducing your risk of injury. Once you understand the basic postures, you can take Level 2 Power Yoga.
